Red Oak - Quercus rubra Rubra
Plant a red oak only if you have the ground for it. This is a broad, deep crowned shade tree for parks, rural entrances and wide verges, and it is entirely wrong for a suburban courtyard, however well behaved it looks in a 45L pot on planting day.
The leaf is large and boldly lobed, each lobe drawn out to a bristle point, matt dark green in summer and turning russet through to dull red in autumn. Colour comes on strongest in cold districts; in mild coastal gardens the foliage is more likely to brown off and hang on. Growth is unhurried in the early years, then it settles into a proper canopy.
Acorns and heavy leaf fall come with the tree, so keep it clear of pools and gutters. Bare root stock is available through the dormant months and is the practical way to establish larger numbers for an avenue or driveway planting.
