Texas Red Oak - Quercus buckleyi
On the limestone ridges of central Texas, Quercus buckleyi grows where summers run long and hot and the soil is shallow and alkaline, which tells you most of what you need to know about where it will succeed here. It is a moderate sized member of the red oak group, deciduous, with deeply cut, bristle tipped leaves that turn genuinely red rather than dull brown in autumn wherever the season cools off sharply.
It is regularly confused with Shumard oak, and the two are close relatives. Buckleyi is generally the smaller and more drought hardy of the pair once established, which makes it worth considering for hot inland sites where an English oak would struggle. Give it full sun and room for a spreading crown, and do not crowd it against a building.
Growth is slow to moderate, so the advanced 50 litre size is a sensible starting point when shade is wanted this decade. Water deeply and less often through the first summers to drive roots down. Delivery is a flat $99 to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA.
