Daimyo Oak - Quercus dentata
Wondering why the leaves are so much bigger than on any other oak in the range? Daimyo oak carries huge, thick, deeply lobed leaves, coarsely textured and bunched in bold whorls at the shoot tips, which gives young trees an almost tropical look that catches people out when they were expecting something like an English oak.
Growth is slow to moderate and the young frame is stiff and openly branched, filling with age into a broad, low crown. Autumn runs to dull bronze and russet rather than clean gold, and many of the dead leaves cling on through winter before letting go, so it is not the tree for anyone who wants a bare, tidy silhouette by June.
Deep soil and steady moisture through the first summers get it away. Those big leaves shred in wind funnels, so keep it out of gaps between buildings. It suits a park, a large lawn or a wide verge, where the coarse leaf litter falls on garden and grass rather than on paving.
