Engelmann Oak - Quercus engelmannii
Not the oak most people picture. Engelmann oak comes from the dry inland ranges of southern California and holds its leaves all year: small, leathery, blunt ended and blue grey, on a low branched frame that spreads wider than it climbs.
Growth is slow to moderate and it stays that way, so this is a tree for a client planting for the next generation rather than the next open home. What you get in return is genuine toughness in hot, open, dry ground once the roots are down, with full sun and free draining soil doing most of the work. Water it while it is establishing, then back off; it evolved with dry summers and resents warm wet soil around the crown, so keep irrigation off the trunk and out of the root zone of a settled tree.
Use it for shade on a large lawn, in a dry climate garden or along a broad verge in a hot inland town. It is uncommon in Australian nurseries, so expect a tree that few people on the street will recognise.
