Water Oak - Quercus nigra
Water oak takes its name from the ground it tolerates: damp bottom land, creek flats and heavy soils that would sit far too wet for most oaks. Leaves are small and paddle shaped, widest near the tip and tapering to the stalk, dark and glossy through summer. It is deciduous, but in mild districts the drop runs late and looks half hearted rather than a clean autumn show.
Growth is slow to moderate, the young crown conical before it rounds out with age. Full sun and reliable moisture suit it, and it forgives wet feet better than the average oak.
Two practical points before you specify it. The timber is comparatively soft for an oak, so older trees can shed limbs in storms and are better placed over lawn than over parking or seating. And the surface roots make it a poor neighbour for paths and shallow garden beds. Give it room as a shade or avenue tree, particularly in warm humid parts of Queensland and northern New South Wales.
