Upright English Oak - Quercus robur Fastigiata
This is the English oak that goes up rather than out. Branches are held steeply upright into a tapered column, giving oak character and oak leaf on a footprint that suits a driveway row or a formal avenue where a spreading crown would never fit.
The leaves are the familiar rounded lobes of English oak, with small ear like flaps where the blade meets the stalk. It is deciduous, though autumn colour is a muted yellow brown rather than a display, and the leaves often hang on late into the season. Growth is slow to moderate in full sun with moderate water.
Two practical notes. Width varies from plant to plant, since some stock is seed raised rather than grafted, so if you need a matched avenue buy the whole run in one order. And in humid summers the late flush often picks up powdery mildew, which looks poor for a few weeks but does not set an established tree back.
