Shumard Oak - Quercus shumardii
Plans and nurseries mix this one up with pin oak constantly, and the difference shows on the ground. Shumard oak keeps its lower limbs more or less horizontal instead of sweeping them down over the footpath, and it colours reliably in warm districts where a pin oak often just turns brown and drops.
The leaves are large and deeply cut with bristled lobe tips, glossy dark green in summer, going scarlet to deep red late in autumn. Growth is slow to moderate but steady, with a strong central leader and a broad crown, which is what makes it a long term avenue, park and large verge tree rather than a garden feature.
It takes heat and dry spells better than the other red oaks once established, and it wants deep soil to do its best work. Deciduous, so factor in leaf and acorn drop and keep it back from pool surrounds and pale paving. Offered here as 200L advanced stock, which is the size to plant if you want real shade this decade.
