Indian Hawthorn Rhaphiolepis indica Snow Maiden (Raphiolepis indica)

Snow Maiden is the white flowered Rhaphiolepis behind a great many carpark islands, roundabouts and streetscape mass plantings, and the reasons are practical. It holds a tight rounded shape without being sheared, and the leathery dark leaves shrug off heat and the glare bouncing back off asphalt and pale paving. Pink tinged buds open white through spring, followed by small dark berries. Its job is low work: a hedge under a window, a front boundary line, or a block of mass planting that has to look even with little attention.

Airflow, irrigation and the leaf spot that strips it bare

It takes full sun to part shade, copes with ordinary soil provided it drains, and once established runs on the low to moderate water the specs list, which is why it survives median strips. Space plants around 60 to 80cm apart for a low hedge or mass planting, and resist the urge to crowd them for quicker cover. It grows from cool temperate districts through to the subtropics, holds up in coastal exposure, and takes the reflected heat off a north facing wall better than most flowering shrubs.

Leaf spot is the failure mode, and crowding is half the cause. In humid summers, and anywhere overhead sprinklers wet the foliage every evening, Rhaphiolepis picks up a fungal leaf spot that starts as dark purple red flecks on the lower leaves, then yellows and drops them, working up the plant until a planting looks skeletal by autumn. It travels in splashed water and overwinters in fallen leaves. Drip or subsurface irrigation, honest spacing so air moves between plants, and raking litter out from underneath do more good than spraying ever will. Once a block is badly infected, replacing it usually beats nursing it back.

Snow Maiden against box and gardenia for a low line

Do not confuse it with the taller indica selections sold for screening; this one stays low, which is the whole point. Against Japanese Box the trade off is geometry versus tolerance: box clips to a crisp edge and holds it but wants better soil, more water and shelter from reflected heat, while Snow Maiden takes the hard site and holds its shape on almost no attention, without ever reading as formal. Box does carry small greenish cream flowers in spring, but they are easy to miss and a clipped hedge rarely shows them at all, where Snow Maiden puts on a display the street can see, and that counts on a front boundary. Cutting into the canopy, not across it

Prune straight after flowering finishes in late spring, shortening the longest shoots back inside the canopy rather than shearing the surface, which keeps the natural rounded form and lets light into the middle. A second light tidy in late summer is enough for most plantings. Older plants that have gone woody take a harder cut in early spring and reshoot from lower down. Feed once in early spring with a complete slow release fertiliser; overfeeding produces soft growth that leaf spot moves through quickly.
