Indian Hawthorn - Rhaphiolepis Snow Maiden (Raphiolepis)
Anyone who has watched a coastal Rhaphiolepis hedge turn blotchy and drop half its leaves has met Entomosporium leaf spot, and it is the one thing worth planning around with this shrub. Give Snow Maiden air movement, water at the roots rather than over the canopy, and clear fallen leaves from the base through humid summers.
Beyond that it is an easy plant. The habit is naturally low and rounded, so it holds a knee to waist high line without constant shearing, and the leathery dark leaves flush bronze before hardening off. White flowers open through late winter and spring across the whole crown, followed by small dark berries. It handles salt wind, poor soil and long dry spells once its roots are down, which is why it turns up in car parks and median strips as often as it does in gardens.
Full sun to part shade suits it. Trim lightly straight after flowering rather than cutting into bare old wood, which is slow to reshoot.
