Indian Hawthorn

Indian hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis) is the shrub landscapers reach for when a job needs flowers on a plant that cannot be allowed to fail: leathery evergreen foliage, spring blossom in white or pink, and tolerance for coastal wind, drought, heat and neglect. This page lists every rhaphiolepis available from our partner farms.

The modern compact cultivars are the pick for hedging and mass planting: Oriental Pink and Orient Pearl with blush flowers on tight rounded bushes, Cosmic White for massed white display, Snow Maiden as the classic compact white, and Hot Tips with its bronze-red new growth. Smaller again, Minikins and Pink Punch suit borders and pots.

The traditional forms still carry the bigger jobs: the species Rhaphiolepis indica and its larger selections Maximus, Springtime, Rajah and Apple Blossom build informal flowering hedges to head height, and the white intermedia Alba covers the old-school landscape slot.

Growing notes: Indian hawthorn wants full sun to light shade and free-draining soil, and after its first summer it is close to indestructible, handling salt wind, reflected heat off paving, and long dry spells. Flowers arrive in massed clusters through spring, followed by blue-black berries the birds take. Clip lightly after flowering to keep hedges dense; it responds to shaping as well as any exotic hedge plant. Watch only for leaf spot in humid shade, which good airflow prevents.

Use it alongside westringia and the rest of the hedging range, or in the low-maintenance palette it was made for. Every order ships farm-direct with flat $99 delivery across QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA, a $399 minimum order, and the 30-Day Healthy Plant Guarantee.
