Apple - Jonathan Malus domestica
Jonathan is one of those old American varieties from the early nineteenth century that has been grown in Australian orchards for generations and still earns a place in a small garden. The fruit is medium sized, bright red over a yellow ground, crisp and sharp off the tree and softening in storage, and it doubles as an eating and a cooking apple. It ripens mid season.
Like all Malus domestica it is deciduous, needs a genuinely cold winter to crop, and transplants best while dormant. It is not reliably self fertile, so pair it with another apple flowering at the same time; Granny Smith and Golden Delicious are the usual backyard partners. Two problems recur: powdery mildew on soft new growth in humid springs, and the dark storage spotting known as Jonathan spot, named after this very variety. Prune to an open vase so air moves through the canopy, keep the tree unstressed for water in summer, and pick before the flesh softens on the branch.
