Chestnut - Castanea sativa
Give this one serious room before you commit to it. Sweet chestnut is a forest tree that ends up broad-crowned and heavy in the trunk, and old bark develops deep furrows that spiral around the stem in a way nothing else in an Australian garden does.
Long, boldly toothed leaves hang in a coarse texture through the warm months and turn tawny gold before dropping. Creamy catkins arrive in summer with a strong and unmistakable scent that some people would rather not have under a bedroom window.
For nuts you need more than one tree, since chestnuts pollinate themselves poorly. Soil matters too: they want a deep, free-draining, slightly acid profile and dislike limey ground.
The burrs are the real catch. They are covered in fine sharp spines and drop by the thousand, which makes this a poor choice over lawn where people walk barefoot, or above paving, decking and pool surrounds. Site it out in the paddock or at the back of a large block and it is a magnificent long-lived deciduous shade tree.
