Chestnut - Flemings Prolific Castanea sativa
Plant this one where you have room and a long horizon. Flemings Prolific is an Australian selection of the European sweet chestnut, a large deciduous tree that in good soil becomes a substantial shade tree with a heavy trunk, not a backyard fruit tree in any ordinary sense. It bears well and is a useful pollen parent, but chestnuts are effectively not self fertile, so a second compatible tree flowering at the same time is needed for a real crop.
It wants cool winters, deep, acidic to neutral, freely drained soil, and no lime. Waterlogging and Phytophthora are what kill chestnuts in Australia, so avoid heavy clay flats and low corners that pond.
The nuts fall inside spiny burrs that are unpleasant underfoot, which makes this a poor choice near lawn, paths or a pool, and a good one in a paddock corner or an orchard row.
