Yellow Buttons - Chrysocephalum Desert Flame PBR
Few Australian groundcovers keep pushing colour through a dry summer the way the yellow buttons do. Desert Flame is a selected form of Chrysocephalum, a low spreading perennial with soft grey-green woolly foliage and clusters of small golden button flowers held just above the mat. Flowering runs through the warm months and keeps going as long as the plant is not sitting wet.
It works as a front-of-border filler, a rockery spiller tumbling over a low wall, or mass planted in median strips and verge gardens where irrigation is unreliable. Full sun and sharp drainage are the two things it will not compromise on.
The usual failure is kindness. Heavy clay, mulch pushed up over the crown or regular summer watering in a humid climate will rot it out. Shear the whole plant back by about a third once the main flush finishes, otherwise it opens up in the centre and goes woody. It is often mistaken for the taller paper daisies, which are a different plant with different needs.
