Rock Correa - Correa glabra
Unlike the soft-leaved coastal correas, Correa glabra comes from rocky inland country in eastern Australia and behaves accordingly: stiffer glossy leaves, a denser and more upright frame, and real tolerance of dry shade and shallow stony ground. Crush a leaf and you get a sharp citrus scent, a clear signal that this is a relative of boronia and lemon rather than anything to do with fuchsias.
The bells are green to yellow-green in most forms, hanging along the stems through the cooler months and pulling in spinebills and other small honeyeaters. It is one of the few evergreen shrubs that will hold its condition in the dry, root-filled soil under established eucalypts, and that is where it earns its keep in a design.
What it will not take is heavy wet soil through a humid summer. Root rot moves fast in those conditions, so plant on a slight mound in high rainfall districts and skip the summer irrigation. Only the 140mm size is grown, which suits mass planting and low informal hedging.
