Firesticks - Euphorbia tirucalli Sticks-On-Fire
Everything about this plant is easy except its sap. The milky latex in the stems is caustic, it blisters skin and it can do genuine damage to an eye, so wear gloves and eye protection whenever you cut it, keep it off a front verge where kids or dogs push through, and never burn the prunings.
With that said, nothing else in the garden looks like it. Firesticks and Sticks on Fire are the same plant: an upright, branching succulent built from pencil-thick stems that colour coral, orange and red at the tips. It carries almost no leaves, and the green stems stay live year round. Colour comes from stress, so lean soil, full sun, cold nights and dry conditions push it up, while shade, rich soil and regular water turn the whole thing green and soft.
Sharp drainage is not optional. It rots in wet clay and will not take frost, so in cold districts grow it in a pot you can shift under cover.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 11 sizes, from 130mm up to 400mm, priced from $16.95 to $229.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
