Fig - Ficus hillii Flash
Think carefully about where this one goes before you dig the hole. Flash is a selected form of Ficus microcarpa var. hillii, the Hills Weeping Fig, chosen for dense growth and bright glossy new leaves that flush over the older dark green foliage. It clips hard and holds a crisp face, which is why it dominates the market for tall formal hedges, pleached screens and driveway avenues.
Before planting, be clear on three things:
- The roots are vigorous and shallow, and are well known for lifting paving, cracking pool shells and finding drainage lines.
- Left unclipped it becomes a large tree, not a shrub.
- Ficus leaf-curling psyllid distorts soft new growth, and scale builds up in humid, still positions.
None of that rules it out. It means keeping the plant well clear of pipes, boundaries and structures, or growing it in a substantial planter with root barrier. Full sun to part shade, moderate water, and a shaping cut two or three times through the warm months. Advanced 30 and 90 litre plants give screen height straight away.
