Hop Goodenia - Goodenia ovata Gold
Few Australian native shrubs keep flowering as persistently as hop goodenia, and this golden leaved form adds a second layer of interest to it. The foliage carries a lime to gold cast that lifts shaded corners, and the bright yellow fan shaped flowers, split into that distinctive lower lip, appear over long stretches of the year rather than in one short burst.
Goodenia ovata is a soft, scrambling shrub rather than a rigid one. It grows quickly, tolerates more shade and more soil moisture than most natives, and is widely used in revegetation work along creek lines and damp gullies through the south east. In a garden it can go leggy and open with age, so cut it back reasonably hard after a flowering flush to keep it furnished to the ground. Coloured foliage forms will throw the occasional plain green shoot, and those are worth removing as soon as you notice them.
