Yellow Hakea - Hakea nodosa
Here is the hakea for a spot that stays damp. Hakea nodosa, the yellow hakea of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, grows naturally in heathland and around swamp margins, and it tolerates seasonally wet, poorly drained ground that would kill the Western Australian species outright. That alone makes it worth knowing about.
It forms an upright, twiggy shrub with narrow leaves and, through autumn and winter, small clusters of pale yellow flowers tucked into the leaf axils along the stems. They are lightly scented, modest from a distance and better appreciated up close. Hard woody fruits follow and sit on the branches for years.
Use it as a screening or habitat shrub in a native planting, in a mixed windbreak, or along a drainage line where you want something permanent and low maintenance. Full sun to light shade suits it, it accepts sand through to clay loam, and it responds to a light trim after flowering rather than a hard cutback. Skip phosphorus fertilisers.
