Guinea Flower - Hibbertia cuneiformis
Hibbertia cuneiformis is the upright, shrubby member of a genus most gardeners know only as a sprawling groundcover. It grows as a bushy evergreen shrub with glossy, wedge shaped leaves toothed towards the tip, and it opens bright yellow five petalled flowers over a long stretch from late winter into the warmer months. The plant comes from the south west of Western Australia and is genuinely coastal, so wind and light salt are not a problem.
It takes pruning better than most hibbertias. Tip prune young plants to build density, then cut it back after the main flush, and it will hold a soft informal hedge or low screen rather than opening out at the base.
Drainage matters more than anything else. Heavy clay that stays wet through a humid east coast summer is the usual cause of a sudden collapse, so raise the bed or add coarse material. Sun to dappled shade both work, though flowering is heaviest in sun.
