Guinea Flower - Hibbertia Ocean Reef PBR
On sandy coastal blocks where lawn gives up and the usual border plants look wrong, the guinea flowers earn their keep. Hibbertia Ocean Reef is a low spreading selection carrying the bright five-petalled yellow flowers the genus is known for, scattered across dense small-leaved growth over the warmer half of the year rather than in one short burst.
Use it as a groundcover across an embankment, spilling from a raised planter, or filling the gaps between larger natives where you want soil covered without a mat that needs constant edging. Salt-carrying wind and free-draining sand suit it.
What it will not accept is heavy soil that stays wet through winter. If your beds are clay, plant into a mound and go light on rich compost and thick mulch around the crown. A light trim after the main flush keeps it tight and stops the centre going woody and open. Available in 170mm, with flat $99 delivery to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA on orders from $399.
