Jaboticaba - Plinia cauliflora
Fruit that forms straight out of the trunk and main limbs is the giveaway with jaboticaba. Puffy white flowers appear along the bark, then grape-sized fruit ripen almost black, with sweet translucent pulp inside a thin skin. Because that fruit keeps for only a few days off the tree, growing your own is realistically the only way to eat it.
It is an evergreen with small glossy leaves that flush coppery pink on new growth, and it is famously slow, which is exactly why an advanced 75L plant is worth paying for rather than starting from seed. Give it deep, well-drained soil on the acidic side, heavy organic mulch and steady moisture. Alkaline or limed ground turns the foliage yellow between green veins, and it sulks after a dry spell. Young plants need protection from frost and cold wind, so it suits warm coastal and subtropical gardens best.

This plant is available in 3 sizes, from 200mm up to 75L, priced from $35.95 to $529.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
