Lavender - Fairy Wings Spellbound Lavandula pedunculata
Because Spanish lavenders set seed freely, the first thing to know about any Lavandula pedunculata is that this species and its close relative L. stoechas are regulated as weeds in parts of southern Australia, Victoria in particular. Named garden selections such as Spellbound are grown for the flower rather than for naturalising, but if you live near bushland or grazing country it is worth checking your council or state list before mass planting, and dead-heading through the season rather than letting heads dry on the plant.
Dead-heading pays off twice over. Cutting spent heads back into leafy growth keeps Fairy Wings types pushing fresh flushes through spring and summer instead of setting seed and going woody in the middle.
Give it the hottest, sharpest-drained position you have, use coarse mulch pulled back from the crown, and skip rich fertiliser. Soft lush growth on a lavender means fewer flowers and more rot. It earns its place on dry embankments, driveway strips and in pollinator borders.
