Broad Leaved Lilly Pilly - Acmena hemilampra Dwarf Hedgemaker (Syzygium hemilamprum)
Because psyllid pimpling ruins so many lilly pilly hedges, the Acmena side of the family gets specified constantly, and this is the broad leaved one. Where the common syzygiums carry small pointed leaves, hemilamprum has large, wide, glossy leaves with a leathery feel, and the new growth flushes pink to bronze before hardening to dark green. Fluffy white flowers are followed by white fruit.
Dwarf Hedgemaker is the compact selection, chosen to make a hedge without the constant cutting a full sized rainforest tree demands. It clips into a bold, coarse textured formal hedge or screen that suits subtropical and rainforest planting schemes far better than the fine leaved cultivars do.
Its origins are subtropical rainforest, so it wants moisture, organic soil and shelter. Young plants are frost tender and can be knocked about by cold inland winters, and it looks tired in dry, exposed, root competitive spots. Feed and mulch it and it responds quickly.

This plant is available in 2 sizes, from 200mm up to 45L, priced from $30.95 to $259.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
