Sea Lavender - Limonium perezii Blue
The papery violet sprays sold by florists as statice usually come from this Canary Islands perennial rather than the annual kind. Limonium perezii builds a low rosette of large, leathery, paddle-shaped leaves, then throws branched stems well clear of the foliage carrying flat heads of violet-blue calyces with small white centres. The colour sits in the papery calyx, not the tiny true flower, which is why cut stems hold their tone for months in a dry vase.
It is a coastal plant first and foremost. Sharp drainage, sand or gravel, salt wind and lean soil suit it, while heavy clay and a wet, humid summer will rot the crown. Treat it as short lived and plan on replacing clumps every few years rather than nursing tired ones along. It self seeds freely near the coast, so cut spent stems off in sandy coastal gardens in WA and SA if you do not want volunteers. The evergreen rosettes look tidiest with the oldest leaves pulled away in late winter.
