Pear - Nashi Pyrus pyrifolia (Pyrus communis)
Nashi are eaten crisp, straight off the tree, which is the whole point of them and where most people go wrong. A European pear is picked hard and ripened indoors. A nashi ripens on the tree and stays crunchy and juicy like an apple, round in shape, with skin that is either clear yellow or finely russeted brown depending on the variety.
The tree is deciduous, upright and covered in white blossom in early spring before the leaves appear. It needs genuine winter chill to crop properly, which makes it a better bet for Victoria, the tablelands, the Adelaide Hills and southern inland districts than for warm coastal Queensland.
- Plant a second nashi, or a European pear that flowers at the same time, to get decent fruit set.
- Thin the young fruitlets hard; a tree left to carry everything gives small, bland fruit.
- Pear and cherry slug skeletonises the leaves in summer and washes off with a hose.
