Flowering Cherry - Prunus x incam JFS-KW14 First Blush
Flowering cherries usually want room to spread sideways. This one does not. Prunus x incam JFS-KW14, sold as First Blush, is a narrow upright selection from a cross between Prunus incisa and Prunus campanulata, holding a tight vase to columnar outline that suits narrow verges, driveway lines and courtyards where a spreading cherry would be hacked into an awkward shape inside five years.
Flowers are bright pink and single, opening early on bare stems, and the campanulata parent is the Taiwan cherry, which brings a lower chill requirement than the Japanese flowering cherries carry. In practice that means it tends to flower more reliably in milder districts where serrulata types perform poorly.
Deciduous, moderate in growth, wanting full sun and moderate water on soil that never stays wet. Foliage colours before it drops in autumn. Prune sparingly and after flowering only; the narrow habit is genetic and does not need shaping to keep it.
