White Flowering Cherry - Mount Fuji Prunus serrulata x shirotae Grafted
Every grafted cherry is really two plants, and knowing where one stops and the other starts saves years of trouble. This Mount Fuji is worked onto a rootstock, so the swollen union low on the stem is the boundary. Everything above it flowers white and spreads wide; everything below it is stock wood that will try to take over given the chance.
Check the base a few times a year and rub off any shoot rising from below the union or straight out of the roots while it is still soft. Stock suckers are vigorous, they leaf out earlier and look coarser in the leaf, and one left to run will outgrow the grafted top.
Plant so the union sits above finished soil level and keep mulch pulled back from it, because a buried union rots or throws its own roots. The payoff for buying grafted is that the tree comes true to the variety and flowers years earlier than a seedling would. Cold-winter districts suit it best.
