White Flowering Cherry - Mount Fuji Prunus serrulata x shirotae
Mount Fuji is grown for width. Where most flowering cherries build an upright vase, 'Shirotae' spreads horizontally on tiered, slightly drooping limbs, so an established tree is usually broader than it is tall and throws a wide low canopy. The spring flowers are large, semi-double and white with fringed petal edges, carried in loose clusters, and they open alongside the bronze-green new leaves rather than on bare wood.
The tree is deciduous, colouring yellow through soft orange in autumn before dropping. Like all Japanese flowering cherries it needs real winter chill to flower properly, which puts it in Victoria, the ACT, the southern and tableland districts of New South Wales, the Adelaide Hills and the cooler parts of Western Australia rather than the humid coastal subtropics.
Allow room to match that spread, give it well-drained soil and steady summer moisture, and protect the trunk. Borers and gummosis follow stress and mechanical damage, so keep whipper snippers away from the base and prune only in dry weather.
