Weeping Silver Pear - Pyrus salicifolia
Pyrus salicifolia earns its place on foliage: narrow willow like leaves, silvered on both surfaces when young and holding a soft grey through summer, carried on a twiggy frame that builds into an untidy dome rather than a neat lollipop.
This is the straight species, not the weeping clone, so expect an upright to spreading habit that you can lift and train as a small standard or leave low as a large silver shrub. Small cream white flowers open with the new leaves in spring, followed by hard little pears of no use in the kitchen.
Full sun is not negotiable. In part shade the silver washes out to green and the crown opens up and looks sparse. Water moderately, plant into ground that drains, and thin the interior every few winters, since congested twiggy growth traps humidity and brings on leaf spot. It is deciduous, so plan for a bare grey framework over winter. Landscapers use it as a soft grey break against dark leaved hedging or along a gravel driveway.
