Spiny Saltbush - Rhagodia spinescens Creeping Saltbush
Not a lawn substitute, and not a soft plant. Creeping saltbush is a tough grey native subshrub that mounds and runs sideways into a dense mat of small, thick, silver grey leaves on wiry stems, and it earns its keep on the sites that kill everything else: coastal exposure, salt spray, road verges, batters and the reflected heat off walls and paving.
Evergreen and self reliant once it is away, it holds colour right through summer when soft groundcovers have collapsed. Sharp drainage is the main requirement. It rots in soggy shaded ground and goes leggy and open where the sun does not reach it.
Cut it back hard every couple of years and it reshoots from the woody base, which is the difference between a tidy silver mat and a sprawling tangle. It sits well in mass plantings with westringia, kangaroo grass and coastal daisies, and it takes light foot traffic at the edges without dying out. Supplied in 140mm and 200mm, the sizes that knit together quickest.
