How quickly should I plant it?
For best results, unpack your plant promptly, water it well, and plant it as soon as practical.
Give your plant the best start after delivery.
- Unpack your plant promptly and check the soil moisture on arrival.
- Water deeply after planting to settle soil around the root zone.
- Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, without leaving it waterlogged.
- Choose a planting position suited to the plant's light requirements.
- Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
- Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or stem.
- For hedging or screening plants, trim lightly once established to encourage denser growth.
Care requirements vary by variety, climate, season, and planting location. Always match watering, sunlight, and soil conditions to the specific plant you are buying.

Indian Hawthorn - Rhaphiolepis indica Alba (Raphiolepis indica)
Alba is the old white flowered Indian Hawthorn, grown in Australian gardens long before the modern compact pink selections arrived. Expect an evergreen shrub of medium size with thick, dark, blunt tipped leaves, clean white spring flowers in loose sprays, and small blue black berries that the birds work through by late summer.
Worth knowing before you specify it: the name Alba is applied loosely across several white flowering Rhaphiolepis in the nursery trade, hybrids included, so treat mature size as a range and prune to the dimensions you want rather than assuming a figure. Those berries also mean self sown seedlings turning up in beds and occasionally in nearby bushland, so pull them while they are small.
Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water once established, and free draining soil. Overhead irrigation combined with still humid air brings on leaf spot, the purple blotching and defoliation that plagues this genus, so water at ground level where you can. Stock rotates between farms, so ask about current sizes.
Choosing a size
This plant is available in 4 sizes, from 140mm up to 300mm, priced from $16.95 to $88.95 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. These are younger plants, priced for planting in quantity, and they establish quickly once in the ground. Not sure which to choose? Read our guide to coastal planting.
