Fan Flower - Scaevola aemula Surdiva White PBR
Landscapers reach for the Surdiva types when they need a native groundcover that keeps flowering without a mid-season collapse. This is the white form of Scaevola aemula, a low spreading plant with soft stems that run sideways and lift only slightly, covered through the warm months in small flowers shaped like a half-open fan, with all the petals arranged on one side.
It works hardest in three situations: spilling over retaining walls and planter edges, filling the front of a hot dry native bed, and in hanging baskets where it trails without going ropey. Heat, reflected wall heat and coastal exposure are no trouble. Cold wet clay is.
Two habits keep it looking right. Shear it back by about a third when flowering slows in midsummer, which brings on a fresh flush instead of a bare centre. And feed lightly with a native-safe fertiliser, since heavy general purpose feeding pushes soft leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
