Fan Flower - Scaevola nitida Aussie Spirit
Unlike the trailing Scaevola aemula lines that dominate hanging basket benches, S. nitida is a firmer, more shrubby coastal species from southern and western Australia, with thick shining leaves that shrug off salt wind. Aussie Spirit carries the fan flowers the genus is named for: each bloom looks like a daisy split in half, sitting in the blue-mauve to white range common across the group, and produced in flushes through the warmer months rather than one short burst.
In the garden it earns its place as a low filler along a hot driveway edge, in a raised coastal bed, or spilling over a retaining wall in a 130mm run of plants set close together.
What kills fan flowers is rarely cold. It is wet feet, heavy soil and mulch piled against the crown. Give it sharp drainage, full sun and a gritty or sandy mix, and go easy on phosphorus. Plants tend to go woody and bare in the middle by their second or third summer, so tip prune lightly after each flowering flush instead of cutting back hard into old wood.
