Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia Burnley Select
Anyone who has planted seedling Chinese elms in a line knows the problem, which is that they vary so much in shape that a row of them never looks like a row. That is what the horticultural campus at Burnley in Melbourne set out to fix with this selection, and it holds a consistent upright habit, which is what avenue and street work needs.
The bark is the ornamental feature. It flakes away in small plates to leave a mottled patchwork of grey, fawn and orange on the trunk and main limbs. Leaves are small, glossy and finely toothed, and they hang on late into autumn before the tree goes bare.
It is a tough thing. Full sun, moderate water, moderate to fast growth, and it handles compacted verge soil, heat, drought and reflected pavement heat as well as any deciduous tree sold here. Dutch elm disease is not an issue and elm leaf beetle bothers it far less than it bothers English elm.
Roots are vigorous and run near the surface, so keep it clear of old drains, small pipes and paving edges. Sizes 30L to 300L. We deliver into QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA for a flat $99, minimum order $399.
