Elm - Ulmus Sapporo Autumn Gold
Elm leaf beetle is the first thing anyone in Victoria or South Australia raises before planting an elm, and it will chew this one too, so build a treatment program into any avenue job from the start.
Sapporo Autumn Gold came out of an American breeding program aimed at disease resistance and turned out to be a genuinely tough street tree. It establishes quickly, stands upright while young and broadens to a rounded crown with age, and it is untroubled by wind, compacted soil or alkaline ground. Being deciduous, it gives clean yellow autumn colour before leaf fall and lets winter sun through.
It does not throw the root suckers that make English elm such a nuisance through lawns and garden beds, which is a large part of why it gets specified for carparks, nature strips and driveway avenues where a full sized elm would be unmanageable.
Full sun and moderate water suit it, with moderate to fast growth once the roots are away.
