Japanese Zelkova - Zelkova serrata Green Vase
Where councils once planted elms they now often plant zelkova, and Green Vase is the selection chosen when the vase shape matters. The main limbs rise at a narrow angle before arching outwards, so the canopy lifts clear over a road or footpath without the constant crown raising an elm demands.
Leaves are neat, toothed and smaller than an elm leaf, turning through orange and bronze-red before dropping. The bark starts smooth and grey, then flakes with age to show orange underneath, which is worth planting for on its own. It is deciduous, so winter sun reaches whatever sits below.
It takes compacted urban soil, reflected heat and wind, and it is far less troubled by elm leaf beetle than the elms it stands in for. Give it room to reach full width before the canopy meets a building.
Stock runs from bare root through to 800L transplants. We deliver to the eastern states, SA and WA, with a $399 minimum order.
