Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia Todd
Planted in a row, this one grows in evenly, which is the whole argument for a named clone over seedling stock. The Todd selection came out of Australia, chosen for a consistent upright vase shaped frame and small, hard, glossy leaves that sit densely on the branch.
The bark is the feature. It flakes away in irregular plates to leave a mottled patchwork of grey, olive, orange and fawn that keeps developing as the trunk thickens, so it is worth lifting the crown as the tree matures to put that on show.
Two practical advantages over English elm: this species does not run suckers through the garden, and it carries far less elm leaf beetle damage. Between them, that is why parvifolia is now specified so often in street and park work.
Foliage holds late into autumn, well after most deciduous trees have finished, then turns yellow and drops. Moderate to fast in full sun with moderate water, and tolerant of compaction and heat.
