Zoysia Zen Grass
If you have seen the rolling green mounds of a Japanese courtyard garden, this is the sort of grass behind them. Zoysia grown as an ornamental is planted from potted plugs rather than laid as turf, and left unmown it forms soft undulating cushions of fine, slightly curling leaf that follow the shape of the ground beneath.
Plugs are spaced out and left to knit together, which takes patience. Zoysia establishes slowly next to couch or buffalo, and weed control through that first season is the whole battle, because once the cover closes it is very good at keeping weeds out on its own.
Know the limits. It wants full sun and free drainage, it thins badly in shade, it is not built for heavy foot traffic or dogs, and through a cold inland winter it goes dull and strawy before greening again in spring. Used as a textural ground cover between stepping stones, over low mounds or under a feature tree, it does something no conventional lawn does.
