Planting into clay: what works and what to stop doing

The hole you dug on Saturday still has water in it on Tuesday. The shrub you planted last autumn looked fine until the first wet week, then yellowed from the base up and never recovered. And in the dry, the ground is hard enough that the mattock bounces. That is one site telling you the same thing three ways: you are planting into clay.
Most clay advice is vague or actively wrong, and the wrong version costs plants.
Clay is a structure problem, not a fertility problem
Clay particles are tiny and flat, and they hold water and nutrients far better than sand does. Clay is good ground to eat from; gardeners on heavy soil usually need less fertiliser, not more.
What clay lacks is pore space. Roots do not only drink, they breathe, and they need air in the gaps between particles. In clay those gaps are small, poorly connected, and after rain they stay full of water for days rather than hours. Roots in airless, saturated soil suffocate, and the pathogens behind root rot thrive in exactly those conditions. Almost every clay failure described as "it just died for no reason" is that sequence.
The other half is the swing. Ground that is a bog in August cracks and sets like fired brick by January, so a clay plant has to tolerate both. That is why "likes moist soil" is not the same as "tolerates clay".
Why digging a hole and backfilling with good soil drowns plants
The usual advice is to dig a generous hole, backfill with a bag of quality garden mix, and plant into that. On sand or loam it does no harm. In clay it builds a bathtub. Water moves easily through the loose backfill, then hits the clay wall and stops. Rain on the bed, plus whatever seeps in sideways, collects with nowhere to go. You have not improved the drainage; you have dug a sump and put the root ball at the bottom of it.
A second failure sits on top of the first. Roots that meet a smooth clay wall turn and run along it rather than push through, especially if the sides were dug wet and glazed. The plant circles inside a pot-shaped volume of imported soil, never anchors, and goes over in the first decent wind.
Mounding is the answer, and it is not a compromise
Stop trying to make a hole drain and build upwards instead. Set the root ball so its top sits proud of the existing grade, then mound soil up and over the sides, tapering it well past the root ball rather than piling a steep cone. A wide, low mound sheds water and pushes roots outwards into the native clay. For a bed or hedge line, do it continuously: a raised bed or long low ridge beats a row of separate craters.
Dig wide and shallow rather than deep, and roughen the sides with a fork. Never work clay while it is wet, because that is when you do damage that takes seasons to undo. Mulch heavily and keep it off the trunk: organic matter belongs on top of clay, where worms and roots draw it down. The gypsum test, and when gypsum does nothing
Gypsum has a reputation as a general clay cure. It is not one. It only improves structure in sodic, or dispersive, clay, where sodium on the clay particles makes them repel each other and collapse into sludge when wet. The calcium in gypsum displaces that sodium and lets the particles clump again. On non-sodic clay, gypsum changes essentially nothing, however many bags you spread.
Test before you spend. Take a dry, undisturbed lump of soil about the size of a pea, straight from the ground rather than crumbled in your fingers. Drop it into a glass of rainwater or distilled water, do not stir, and leave it overnight.
In the morning, a lump that has slumped and thrown a cloudy, milky halo around itself is dispersive clay, and gypsum will genuinely help; apply it at the rate on the bag and repeat over a few seasons rather than expecting one dose to do it. A lump that has simply sat there in clear water is stable clay, and gypsum is not your tool. Mounding, mulch and the right plant list are.
Plants that genuinely tolerate heavy, wet ground
Melaleuca and callistemon first
If you lean on one group for clay, make it the paperbarks and bottlebrushes. Many grow naturally on swamp margins, floodplains and creek banks, so seasonal waterlogging is what they evolved into rather than a stress to survive. They also handle the dry, cracked half of the clay year.
Melaleuca quinquenervia, the broad leaved paperbark, is the call for genuinely boggy ground on a larger block, and it runs from 200mm pots to 300L. For a garden-scale tree with the same tolerance, Melaleuca linariifolia, snow in summer, takes heavy soil and flowers white in early summer. The Snowstorm form is a compact shrub, not a tree. On the bottlebrush side, Callistemon salignus, the willow bottlebrush, is a creek-line species and a steady small tree for damp clay. For screening, Callistemon viminalis Captain Cook is the compact option, and the bottlebrush collection runs from low mounding forms up to 100L trees. Space shrub-sized plants about one per metre and give them full sun.
Trees that hold up
Be selective with eucalypts, because plenty of gums come from sharply drained country. Eucalyptus robusta is a swamp-margin species and copes with periodically wet, heavy ground where drier-country gums will not, though it makes a 20m tree and wants room away from the house and services. Browse the gum tree range with that caveat rather than assuming a native shrugs off a wet site. In a family garden, note that eucalypt foliage and oil are toxic to dogs and cats if chewed.
Among exotics, elms are quietly good clay performers. Chinese elm tolerates compacted, heavy soil and suits a clay-bound back lawn, and the elm range has several selected forms. It suckers and seeds about, so check council rules before planting a nature strip. Larger stock needs the mound built properly and staking that allows some movement, so read the establishment guide before ordering advanced trees.
Screening and the ground layer
Lilly pilly is the default screening plant here and only a partial fit. Most Syzygium and Acmena want moisture but resent standing water, so they do well on a raised bed over clay and poorly in a hole dug into it. The exception is Syzygium francisii, a creekside rainforest species that takes damper ground, and the lilly pilly range has narrow and dwarf forms for a mounded hedge line.
At ground level, Lomandra hystrix is the plant to know: it grows on creek banks, handles periodic inundation, binds a slope and asks for little once away. Run it through low spots and swales where nothing woody should go. Poa labillardieri does the same job with a softer look; there is more in lomandra and grasses, and the natives collection is the wider shortlist.
What to stop doing, and what not to plant
Stop digging deep holes and filling them with bought soil; doing it more carefully does not help. Stop rotary hoeing clay while it is wet, which smears the structure and creates a compacted pan below the tilled layer. Stop adding sand in small quantities: unless you replace much of the profile, sand plus clay moves towards concrete, not loam. And stop over-fertilising, since poor growth on clay is usually an oxygen problem wearing a nutrient-deficiency costume.
As for what not to plant, the Proteaceae are the clearest group to avoid. Grevillea and banksia are adapted to sharply drained, low-phosphorus soils and are very susceptible to root rot in saturated ground. Lavender, olives and most succulents fail for the same reason, and Japanese maples dislike both halves of the clay year. Westringia is the near miss: an Australian coastal shrub rather than a Mediterranean one, it takes heavy soil better than its reputation suggests, but still wants the mound rather than the wet corner. None of these are impossible on a clay block, but they belong on a raised bed of coarse free-draining material, at the top of a slope, or in a pot.
One last note: if water pools on the surface for more than a day after ordinary rain, no plant choice fixes it. Deal with the water first, with a shallow swale, a rubble drain to a legal outlet, or a raised bed.
