Native Rosemary - Westringia Bulli Coastal Creep
Bulli Coastal Creep is a prostrate form of the native rosemary, grown for what it does on the ground rather than for its flowers. Grey green leaves sit in neat whorls along low, spreading stems, and small white to pale mauve flowers appear on and off through much of the year. It takes salt spray, sand and wind without complaint, which is why it turns up on coastal banks, in carpark islands and along exposed driveways.
Full sun is not negotiable. In shade it opens up, thins out and loses the tight look that makes it worth planting. The other common failure is skipping the trim: left alone the centre goes woody and bare, and westringias do not reliably reshoot from old leafless wood. A light shear two or three times a year from planting keeps it dense.
Drainage matters more than water. It is drought hardy once away but will rot in a soggy bed. Despite the common name, it is not culinary rosemary and the leaves are not for eating.
