Native Rosemary - Westringia 'WES06' PBR Low Horizon TM
Landscapers reach for Low Horizon when a westringia has to stay under knee height without constant shearing. It is a low, spreading selection of native rosemary that builds a dense grey green mat of fine whorled leaves, with small white flowers scattered through the warmer months and the odd bloom outside them. Full sun and free draining soil are the two things it insists on. In heavy clay or a bed that stays damp, root rot takes plants out patch by patch, usually the ones sitting lowest in the run. Salt wind does not bother it, which is why it ends up in beachfront car parks and nature strips.
Two warnings worth passing on. It is not the rosemary you cook with, despite the leaf, and it will not reshoot reliably from bare old wood, so tip prune lightly and often rather than cutting hard once it has gone leggy.
