Native Rosemary - Westringia Zena
When a low hedge has to hold its shape in salt wind, Westringia earns its place ahead of box or lilly pilly. Fine grey-green leaves sit in whorls up wiry stems, small pale two lipped flowers come and go for much of the year with a heavier show in spring, and the plant shrugs off sand, wind and coastal exposure once its roots are down.
Zena is one of the compact selections grown for clipped work and border edging, and it takes the same treatment as any other coastal rosemary.
- Trim little and often from planting. Cutting back into bare old wood frequently fails to reshoot.
- Keep the soil lean and free draining. Rich, wet ground makes soft open growth that splits open through the middle.
- Full sun. Shade gives you a thin, sprawling plant that never fills.
Despite the common name it is not related to rosemary and has no culinary use.
