Emu Bush - Eremophila alt x macWild Berry
What do you get from crossing Eremophila alternifolia with E. maculata? Fine narrow foliage and a long run of tubular berry-toned flowers held along the stems, right where honeyeaters can reach into them. Flowering is heaviest through the cooler months and then repeats in flushes, which is normal for maculata hybrids rather than a sign the plant is finished.
Drainage decides whether this plant lives. Eremophilas are dry country shrubs and they resent wet feet, humidity and mulch heaped against the stem. On heavy clay or through a wet coastal summer, plant high on a mound with coarse sand or gravel worked through the backfill, and water sparingly once it is away.
Plants of this type may be grown on their own roots or grafted onto Myoporum for difficult soils. If yours is grafted, watch below the graft union and rub off suckers early. Tip prune after each flush to keep the bush full rather than open and woody.
