Emu Bush - Eremophila Magic Blush TM
Most emu bushes are bought on flower colour alone, and Magic Blush does deliver there, with soft blush pink tubular flowers held along the stems and set against the pale grey-green foliage typical of the garden eremophilas. Flowering spreads through the cooler months and into spring rather than arriving in one short burst.
The genus comes from the dry inland, and that dictates how you treat it. Full sun, gritty free-draining soil and air movement are non-negotiable; humidity, overhead watering and heavy mulch banked against the stems are what actually kill these plants in eastern gardens. Many garden eremophilas are grafted onto Myoporum rootstock for exactly that reason, so keep the graft union above soil level and rub off any suckers that appear from below it. Feed sparingly with a low phosphorus native mix, prune lightly after flowering to stop it going woody and bare at the base, and expect nectar feeding birds rather than bees as the main visitors.
