Flax Lily - Dianella 'DP303' PBR Utopia
What separates Utopia from the fine leaved dianellas used along median strips is scale. This is one of the larger flax lilies, with broad blue green straps that stand up out of the crown and then arch, giving a bed some structure instead of another mat of groundcover.
Wiry stems of small blue star flowers rise clear of the foliage and are followed by the violet berries the genus is known for. It takes full sun through to part shade, clumps steadily rather than sprinting, and once the roots are down it asks for very little water. That makes it useful in mass plantings, wide borders and dry banks where a cordyline would cost too much and a grass would read too loose.
The common mistake is shearing it flat like a hedge, which leaves a brown collar of cut ends. Pull or cut tired outer leaves at the base instead, or cut whole clumps hard in late winter. Space plants for airflow to keep leaf spot down.
