Flax Lily - Dianella 'TR20' PBR Tasred
In cold weather the point of Tasred becomes clear. This Dianella tasmanica selection carries broad, deep green strappy leaves through the warm months, then colours through burgundy and red tones as temperatures drop, so a mass planting shifts through the year instead of sitting still. Blue flowers on branching stems and blue-purple berries follow in the usual dianella fashion.
Cold is what triggers the colour, so plants in mild coastal gardens show it less than those in the tablelands or inland Victoria. Full sun to part shade suits it, with low water once established and moderate growth. Two practical notes. Tasmanica types creep on short rhizomes and slowly widen, so allow more room per plant than you would for a fine-leaved dianella. And do not shear them flat with a hedge trimmer; old leaves are best pulled or cut out at the base, which keeps the arching habit intact. Supplied in 5lt, a size that fills a bed quickly.
