Flowering Peach - Alboplena Prunus persica
Late winter into early spring is when a flowering peach earns its space, and Alboplena spends that window covered in fully double white blossom packed along bare stems before a single leaf appears. The flowers are rosette shaped and crowded, closer in look to a small camellia than to the open single blossom of a fruiting peach. The foliage that follows is long and narrow and mid green, and the tree stays modest enough for a suburban front garden.
Ornamental peaches flower on wood made the previous season, so pruning is not optional. Cut the flowered stems back by roughly a third to a half straight after the display and you get the fresh growth that carries next year's flowers. Leave it alone for a few seasons and bloom thins out on old congested wood.
Leaf curl is the recurring problem. Blistered, distorted red new leaves in spring mean the window was missed; a copper spray at bud swell in late winter, before buds open, is the only timing that works. Full sun, and soil that never stays wet.
