Flowering Plum - Purple Jewel Prunus virginiana
Unlike the ornamental plums it sits beside on the bench, Purple Jewel is a chokecherry, Prunus virginiana, and the differences show up quickly. New leaves emerge green and darken to deep purple as they harden, so through spring the crown carries both colours at once. The flowers are not single blossoms on bare wood but small white bottlebrush like spikes held after the leaves, followed by clusters of small dark astringent fruit that birds strip.
Habit is narrow and upright, which is useful where a spreading plum would crowd a path or a fence line. Autumn brings reddish tones before leaf fall.
The known weakness of this species is suckering. Chokecherries throw shoots from the roots, sometimes well out from the trunk, and mowing them off tends to encourage more, so cut them cleanly at their point of origin. It also wants a genuinely cold winter. In humid subtropical gardens the leaf colour muddies and fungal leaf spot becomes a nuisance, which makes it a better proposition for the southern states and the tablelands.
