Conifers and Cypress

Conifers hold their shape and colour through every season, which is why they end up as the backbone of so many Australian gardens: the evergreen screen along a boundary, the pair of clipped columns at a driveway, the single dark shape that anchors a lawn. The upright cypresses do most of the screening work. Italian Cypress Stricta is the narrow pencil form, dense and dark green, useful where you need height and have no room for width; the blue-grey selection is Cupressus sempervirens Glauca. Nitschkes Needles is a selection of the same species that carries juvenile needle-like foliage rather than flat scales, and holds a narrow column as it ages. Juniperus chinensis Spartan is broader at the base and copes with heat and dry soil, which makes it the safer pick on inland and western blocks. Thuja occidentalis Smaragd stays bright green through winter and suits a smaller yard where a cypress would outgrow the space. For a boundary hedge in a hurry, Leyland Cypress Leighton Green is the plain green form and Castlewellan Gold is the yellow-tipped one. Illawarra Plum is the soft-leaved native alternative, slower and better behaved than the cypresses, and it clips well.

Give them full sun and soil that drains. In heavy clay, lift the planting position 200mm to 300mm above the surrounding grade instead of digging down into it, and keep mulch clear of the trunk. Soak them properly every week or two through the first two summers while the roots spread. The Mediterranean and native species harden off to very little water after that, but the spruces, Thuja and the Leylands stay thirstier and will brown off in a long dry spell. Space a screening line at roughly 800mm to 1.2m depending on the form, and trim lightly twice a year instead of hard once.

The one thing that ruins these plants: conifers do not reshoot from bare brown wood. Cupressus, Thuja, Juniperus and Callitris carry live buds only in the green outer shell of foliage, so if you let a hedge run past the width you want and then cut back into old wood, that face stays brown for good. Nothing fills it in. Start trimming in the first or second year while you are still cutting green growth, and hold the hedge at the size you actually want.
